Cellular Degeneration in Wing Development of the Mutant Vestigial of Drosophila Melanogaster
نویسنده
چکیده
The mutant vestigial (vg), in which only the basal part of the wing is present, is one of the most familiar and intensively studied mutants in Drosophila melanogaster. Goldschmidt (1935) and Waddington (1940) made observations on the development of the vg wing but arrived at different conclusions as to the way in which the vg phenotype was produced. Goldschmidt proposed that the reduction of the wing was a consequence of degradation of specific parts of the wing during development. Waddington, alternately, concluded that the missing regions of the wing simply failed to develop. Both of these studies, however, were done with the light microscope, and neither author detected any histological evidence of degeneration. An electron microscope study was undertaken to establish unequivocally whether degeneration occurs in the developing vg wing. M A T E R I A L S A N D M E T H O D S

NE of the methods used in the study of the mechanism of gene action 0 in Drosophila melanogaster has been to observe the modification of the phenotypic effects of mutant genes following alterations in the environment in which development occurs. Thus the effects upon the mutant phenotype of temperature changes, crowding of the cultures, and starvation of the developing individuals have been obs...
متن کاملFurther developmental roles of the Vestigial/Scalloped transcription complex during wing development in Drosophila melanogaster
The Drosophila homologue of the human TEF-1 gene, scalloped (sd), is required for wing development. The SD protein forms part of a transcriptional activation complex with the protein encoded by vestigial (vg) that, in turn, activates target genes important for wing formation. One sd function involves a regulatory feedback loop with vg and wingless (wg) that is essential in this process. The dor...
متن کاملThe effect of dominant vestigial alleles upon vestigial-mediated wing patterning during development of Drosophila melanogaster
The vestigial gene product is required for the completion of wing development in Drosophila melanogaster. In the absence of vestigial gene expression, cells within the larval wing and haltere imaginal discs fail to proliferate normally thus producing adults with severely reduced wings. Of a large number of vestigial mutations that have been characterized, only two are currently known to exist, ...
متن کاملCell cycle genes regulate vestigial and scalloped to ensure normal proliferation in the wing disc of Drosophila melanogaster.
In Drosophila, the Vestigial-Scalloped (VG-SD) dimeric transcription factor is required for wing cell identity and proliferation. Previous results have shown that VG-SD controls expression of the cell cycle positive regulator dE2F1 during wing development. Since wing disc growth is a homeostatic process, we investigated the possibility that genes involved in cell cycle progression regulate vg a...
متن کاملMolecular Mechanisms for High Hydrostatic Pressure-Induced Wing Mutagenesis in Drosophila melanogaster
Although High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) as an important physical and chemical tool has been increasingly applied to research of organism, the response mechanisms of organism to HHP have not been elucidated clearly thus far. To identify mutagenic mechanisms of HHP on organisms, here, we treated Drosophila melanogaster (D. melanogaster) eggs with HHP. Approximately 75% of the surviving flies sho...
